Ideas behind the Art
The Modern Icon
The inspiration for this theme stems from classic iconology and research in the icon world in Russia, Italy and Egypt. It is believed that religious icons are holy in themselves and radiate healing. Does this hold true in other art forms? What heals? Who do you worship? What are our symbols for life? There are many questions posed and just as many answers given as suggestions in these small works. Traditional materials are used in these modern versions of icons, such as wood, oil, paint and gold. Experimental, and symbolic materials are also used, such as medicines, acupuncture needles and bandages. The pieces are made in a portalble format, pocket art, if you will, just in case one has a need for a dose of art.
The Contemplation of Healing
This theme in Green's work addresses the human being's innate ability to heal. Injuries are a part of life, physical and psychological. The process which follows an injury is where we are reminded of the magic of the human's ability to repair itself, without doing anything. It is a built in process, sometimes tender, painful and beautiful. A meditative, abstracted space is created through the large scale works where the bruise in different stages is used as a symbol or metephor for the human's healing process. These works are subtle yet dare the viewer to confront this process up close.
Women's Issues and Female Friendship
Found in this collection is work dealing with fertility, sexuality and the complexities of women. Issues that are about women are often isolated in general conversion, in some cases considered inappropriate or even taboo. This may change within the safe confines of female friendship. In these works the titles and subject matter are often hidden or scrabbled, symbolizing the unspoken nature of these issues. The use of pink and a softer palette are introduced as a metaphor for girl power and femininity. On the other hand you will find an in-your-face approach to the subject matter in some instances. The project continues as Green explores the relationships between women.
A Living Painting - the painter's process
In this performance piece entitled Fish Life invite the viewer to experience the painter's process. Go into the painting so that for just one instant, right before you, it begins to breathe, develop and change in color and form. For one moment the canvas becomes Three-dimensional. It is living for only an instant and then it's over, as those golden moments in the painter's process when everything one creates truly begins to breathe. This experience parallels those golden moments in Life when you really feel that you breathe, develop and change.
If You Could See What You Hear
If you could see what you hear, what would it look like? This performance takes the viewer on a journey of exploring the visual fantasy of sound. In this case the sound of pealing of bells.
If You Could See Taste
This project is underway and will be based on a visual mapping of taste.
